On Thursday afternoon, the lanes of Budhwar Peth witnessed a flurry of activity. Nobody seemed to know what was happening, but a huge crowd of people were gathered. After police officials were told of the abnormal rush, they headed to KayaKalp office in the red light area to investigate the issue and realised that Bill Gates had decided to drop in the city, and he didn’t select a posh locality but Budhwar Peth.

When Gates got out of his car, many people did not even identify him. The Bill and Melinda Gates’ foundation, works to help people lead a healthy life.
The foundation makes donations to an organisation called Pathfinder which helps commercial sex workers in the the city. Bill was in Pune to see how these funds are used to help commercial sex workers. Away from the media glare and all other functions Gates directly went to that area where he spoke with the brothel owners and commercial sex workers.
One of the members of Kayakalp said that Gates was very curious about the lifestyle of commercial sex workers. Gates talked to them with the help of a translator and tried to get to know more about their lifestyle.
He also asked them about their daily income and number of customers that frequented them. He was also very concerned about their health and asked them whether they were aware of diseases caused because of unprotected sex. He also spoke to them about the use of condoms. Additionally, he inquired about the routine medical check-ups of these women.
Many of the women didn’t even know who he was and were quite confused with all the fuss. Some of them could not even pronounce his name properly.The philanthropist made his visit and left immediately trying his best to avoid any publicity. now, that’s true charity.
